The Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) NSW Chapter’s JMO & Student Wing hosted a vibrant and inspiring Eid Dinner on Saturday 5 July 2025, bringing together over 70 Muslim junior doctors, allied health professionals and health students from across New South Wales.
The event was a celebration of community, career, and faith, featuring reflective moments, powerful keynote addresses, and engaging activities.
The evening commenced with a tafsir on Surah Al-Asr, delivered by the committee’s treasurer Omar Al Dabel, setting a reflective tone grounded in Islamic values and the importance of time, action, and collective support. This was followed by a warm welcome and introduction to AIMA by the MCs and Co-Presidents of the Student and JMO Committee, Kiran Qayyum and Umamah Kahloon, who shared the vision and ongoing work of AIMA in supporting Muslim healthcare professionals across Australia.
The event featured two keynote speakers. First, Dr Wajdi Hadi, Consultant Anaesthetist and second Dr Mohammad Awad, a leading Melbourne-based Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon. They shared their recent experience providing medical relief in Gaza, offering insight into the unique challenges of delivering safe care in a conflict zone. Both speakers highlighted the powerful stories of resilience and resourcefulness they found among the people they encountered.
The evening also featured an icebreaker activity – attendees participated in a lighthearted yet thought-provoking quiz exploring the intersection of general Islamic knowledge and medicine in Islam. The friendly competition added to the lively atmosphere and helped spark meaningful discussions.
The night concluded with networking over dessert, as students and junior doctors connected with mentors and peers, inspired by a shared commitment to excellence and service. Events like these continue to reflect AIMA’s dedication to nurturing the professional and spiritual growth of Muslim healthcare workers in Australia.
