AIMA QLD Launches Sunshine Coast Branch with Inaugural Event

The Sunshine Coast Muslim healthcare community celebrated a major achievement on Saturday evening, July 26th, with the establishment of one of AIMA Queensland’s newest regional chapters. The inaugural gathering at the Millwell Community Centre brought together healthcare professionals, students, and community members in a celebration that was particularly well attended by healthcare students in the region.

Dr Maureen Khan, the newly appointed Sunshine Coast Chapter Lead, officially welcomed attendees and marked the opening of the branch.

The program commenced with a Qur’an recitation by Hamza Jean, a University of the Sunshine Coast exercise physiology student.

Following this spiritual opening, AIMA National Vice President and Neuropsychiatrist Dr Omer Shareef shared a thoughtful tazkirah focusing on purpose, dedication, and how healthcare workers serve as representatives of Islamic principles in their daily work.

AIMA QLD Secretary and Student Lead Mustafa Hamimi then outlined the various programs and activities offered by the Student and Junior Medical Officer wing, detailing opportunities in networking, career development, and leadership training.

The main address of the evening came from AIMA National President Dr Muhammad Afzal Kahloon, who provided a comprehensive overview of AIMA’s wide-ranging work and initiatives. He highlighted the organization’s community programs, educational workshops, and health promotion activities that serve both Muslim and broader Australian communities. Dr Kahloon emphasized how Muslim healthcare professionals can positively impact the wider community through excellent patient care, community representation, and bridging cultural understanding within Australia’s diverse healthcare landscape. He also outlined various professional development programs and advocacy initiatives that AIMA undertakes to support its members while contributing meaningfully to public health outcomes across the nation.

As the evening drew to a close, AIMA QLD President Dr Abid Majid shared updates from the recently held 2025 National AIMA Conference in Melbourne and made the exciting announcement that Queensland has been chosen to host the 2027 National Conference.

Following the formal presentations, attendees enjoyed networking opportunities, fostering connections and unity within the local Muslim healthcare community.

The establishment of the Sunshine Coast chapter provides Muslim healthcare professionals and students in the region with access to professional networks, spiritual guidance, and community support. The strong student attendance at the inaugural event reflects the promising future for Muslim healthcare leadership on the Sunshine Coast.Register: Visit tinyurl.com/jyx9mthf
