The Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) expresses its deep sorrow and outrage over the killing of Cardiologist and Director of Indonesian Hospital, Dr. Marwan Al-Sultan by an Israeli airstrike on 2 July 2025.
Dr. Al-Sultan was among the over 1,400 healthcare workers who have lost their lives since the onset of the current war in Gaza. This represents one of the most devastating losses of medical personnel in modern conflict history. Hospitals have been destroyed, ambulances targeted, and clinics bombed, leaving the health system in ruins and civilians without essential care.
AIMA condemns, in the strongest terms, the systematic targeting of medical professionals and health facilities. These acts are clear violations of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which mandate the protection of medical staff and infrastructure in conflict zones.
We appeal to all parties and the international community to act urgently to:
- End the violence and ensure the protection of all civilians,
- Uphold the sanctity of healthcare workers and medical neutrality, and
- Facilitate the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and the rebuilding of Gaza’s shattered health system.
We honour the bravery and sacrifice of all healthcare workers who have risked and given their lives in service of others.
